Itinerary Information

The Great Annapurna Loop with exceptional excursions. Rice fields at the foot of the high peaks through the Thorong pass. A great classic which remains the most varied trekking in Nepal for its geography, its populations and the architecture of the villages crossed. The trail follows the Marsyangdi Gorge to enter the Manang Valley.
Excursion to Pisang Peak base camp for a view of the Annapurna glaciers. Acclimatization day in Manang before crossing Thorong Pass at 5400m.
Descent into the Mustang region then cross the beautiful takalis villages off the beaten track, left bank of the Kali Gandaki. From there the Dhaulagiri icefalls and the blue Nilgiri glacier appear very close.
Ascent through the gurung villages and the viewpoint of Ghorepani before the descent to Pokhara.
The trek will start with a walk through the paths of rice fields, will continue in the pine forests of Pisang to reach the more desert region of Manang and reach the snow-capped mountains with the passage of Thorong Pass. On the other side of the pass, the landscapes of brown and ocher rocks of the Mustang are an astonishing contrast with the high snow-capped peaks. Going down the Kali Gandaki, the left bank trail crosses beautiful takalis villages and their apple and apricot orchards. To reach the viewpoint over the Himalayas from Ghorepani, you cross one of the most beautiful rhododendron forests.
Variation 1. Possibility of making a three-day excursion to Tilicho Lake before taking the Thorong pass.

    1

    From Kathmandu to Besisahar and Darapani 1860m

    Local bus from Kathmandu to Besi Sahar then jeep or mini bus to Darapani. , 6 hours of road then 4 hours of track. (possibility of private vehicle on request)

    From Dharapani to Chame, 2630m.

    Gentle climb to Koto then walk in the forest to Chame, its Buddhist monastery, its hot spring and its view of the Manaslu.

    From Chame to Pisang, 3190m.

    Crossing the Marsangdi Khola. Important apple orchards. Prayer walls. The valley widens. Pisang divided into 2 parts. The upper village is typical of the valley with its houses with terraced roofs. Very beautiful view of Annapurna II, Pisang Peak, Chulu.

    From Pisang to Gyaru, 3670m.

    Acclimatization day at altitude. From the old village of Pisang very steep climb in a pine forest to a pass marked by mani walls. One of the best views of the Annapurna and the Hongde Valley. For the more courageous, continue to the base camp of Pisang peak at 4300m. From the BC the view is panoramic. In this uninhabited high mountain area you can have the chance to meet a herd of mouflons or daphne, Himalayan pheasants or even a solitary yak. ​​Descent and path on the hillside to reach the pretty village of Gyaru. Off the trekking path it has kept all its authenticity.

    From Gyaru to Manang, 3300m

    The trail climbs gently up the hillside overlooking the Hongde valley, leading us to the second isolated village of Ngawal. Views of Annapurna II, III and IV throughout the day. From there descend to Hongde where Manang Airport is located and continue along the Marsyangi River to Manang, 3300m.

    From Manang to Ledar, 4250m.

    Ascent to Tangi and we leave the valley of Marsangdi to enter the valley of Jarsang Khola. The vegetation is increasingly rare. An hour after the pastures of Yak Kharkha we arrive in Ledar.

    From Ledar to Thorong Phedi, 4420m.

    Small day in preparation for the big one of tomorrow. Ascent in a completely desolate landscape.

    From Thorong Phedi to Jharkot, 3550m

    Depart early in the morning for the long climb to Thorong la (5416m). From the pass the view is magnificent on the “great barrier”. The descent is trying (1850m) to Muktinath and its temples, places of pilgrimage for Hindus and Buddhists. Then the slope softens to reach the beautiful village of Jharkot and its monastery.
    8 to 12 hours of walking.

    From Jharkot to Thinigaon, 2880m.

    We are in Mustang, not in the licensed part but in the Mustang district. The Jharkot monastery takes on the appearance of a fortress which dominates the valley from its position. We descend to the wide valley of the Kali Gandaki. Dal bhat lunch in an authentic Takali house. We have to find the classic trail back to Thinigaon. You have to taste the apple juice and the cider.

    From Thinigaon to Tukuche, 2586m.

    The village of Thinigaon supplies Jomsom with labor. We are now in the middle of the apple-cultivated Kali Gandaki area. We pass the sacred lake of Dhumba then by a small pass we switch to the valley of Dhumba, a veritable orchard of fruit trees. The path takes height and dominates Marpha. We reach the Tibetan refugee camp of Chhairo where we eat if it is open in the restaurant of the monastery. Still on the left bank, we descend along the river, before crossing it to reach Tukuche.

    From Tukuche to Lete by the left bank, 2438m.

    The path sometimes crosses the wide bed of the river; sea ​​buckthorn forest whose inhabitants make juice that you can taste in the lodges. We have a fantastic view of the gigantic Dhaulagiri icefall and the Nilgiri in all its height, off the usual trail.

    From Lete to Tatopani, 1189m.

    Crossing the Kali Gandaki and very steep climb through a forest populated by monkeys to a rocky breach. View of the Dhaulagiri. Slow ascent through a rhododendron forest to Ghorepani, 2900m. It’s a long day, depending on form, climb to Poon Hill in the evening or the next day. It is a hill from which we have a beautiful view of the Himalayan range.

    From Tatopani to Ghorepani, 2860m.

    Crossing the Kali Gandaki and very steep climb through a forest populated by monkeys to a rocky breach. View of the Dhaulagiri. Then a gentler climb to Chittre. Slow ascent through a rhododendron forest to Ghorepani, 2900m. It’s a long day, depending on form, climb to Poon Hill in the evening or the next day. It is a hill from which we have a beautiful view of the Himalayan range.

    From Ghorepani to Birethanti, 1080m.

    One hour walk through a rhododendron forest to reach Poon Hill. Early in the morning. Panoramic view of the Annapurna, Machhapuchhare and Dhaulagiri. Continuous staircase descent to Birethanti.

    From Birethanti to Kathmandu.

    Short walk to Naya Pul and back to Kathmandu by local bus. Depending on traffic and traffic jams at the entrance to Kathmandu, the trip lasts more or less 8 hours.
