March to November
Who has not dreamt of discovering this ancient Himalayan kingdom.
This short itinerary allows you to discover the main sites and to be immersed in this forgotten land.
From Jomsom we go up along the Kali Gandaki to arrive in Kagbeni a fortified village, the gateway of upper Mustang. Here we leave behind the classic Annapurna Tour trail to enter the protected sanctuary of the ancient Kingdom.
The mineral landscape is of ochre and brown colours. The villages are surrounded by an oasis of wheat and barley fields.
We overcome a 4000m ( 13000 ft) mountain pass to arrive on Mustang’s plateau. Impressive remnants of troglodyte (cave dwellers) villages hanging on to eroding cliffs.
We arrive in Lo Manthang, 3800m, its imposing walls shelter the Royal Palace and numerous big monasteries. Stroll in Lo’s alleys we are taken back to the middle ages, we are now travelling through time!
Excursion towards the Tibetan border, northwards. We discover lost villages hidden to trekker’s eyes.
We leave Lo-Manthang for Tsarang and its ghostly fort.
Bon religion is a spiritual path of magical belief, multiple gods and pantheism. Ancient Bon documents were found undisturbed in the kingdom of Lo. Some of these added to the knowledge that 18000 years ago Shenrab ( a Buddha like figure) was in charge of teaching the Nine Ways to the people of the mountains to attain liberation.
The religion has left an imprint in every valley, river and home. Chortens stand tall and strong in the region’s vast valleys, reminding us of the human and spiritual presence. Above each home’s frontdoor hangs a colourfully painted goat’s skull protecting its inhabitants. Treasures are hidden all over the region in unreachable caves!
Even the nights are different here, the stars shine brighter and the sky is clearer than anywhere else.
A trek in Mustang is an enchantment.
