Island Peak, located in the Khumbu region near Everest, is a wonderful destination for climbers. It is linked with popular treks such as the Everest Base Camp Trek, the Everest Base Camp via Gokyo and Chola, and the Everest via the Renjo and Chola passes. Many climbers choose Island Peak as their first 6000-meter summit because it offers a trek in the Everest region along with a challenging climb. While the trek itself is accessible, the final ascent is demanding.

You will start the climb via the southeast face, the same route used by Charles Evans during the first successful ascent in 1953. The journey involves a short rock climb, crossing a glacier, and then tackling a snowy slope and ridge to reach the summit. Base Camp is located at Pareshang Gyab, 5087 meters high. The climb continues the next day via the southeast face, heading northeast up a rocky slope marked by cairns. This section leads to a high camp at 5600 meters.

On the second day, you will ascend the right ridge to reach a snowy glacier. The route goes between seracs and crevasses. After crossing a gully prone to rockfalls, you’ll tackle a 45-degree slope over 100 meters to reach the summit at 6189 meters. From the summit, you will see Nuptse and Lhotse to the north, Cho Polu and Makalu to the east, and Baruntse and Ama Dablam to the south. After enjoying the views, you return to Base Camp. A fixed rope will be set up on the steep slope for safety.

Itinerary

Start your journey by traveling from Kathmandu to Ramechhap. You can travel either by a local bus, a more budget-friendly option, or by a private vehicle for a more comfortable and faster ride. The trip usually takes about 4 to 6 hours depending on the mode of transport and road conditions. After arriving in Ramechhap, you’ll stay overnight in a lodge.

Early morning we take a scenic flight from Ramechhap to Lukla. Upon arrival, we meet our trusted porter team and begin our exhilarating trek. As we delve into Sherpa country, we will be greeted by the sight of the first Buddhist monasteries in Chuplung. The trail will guide us alongside the Dudh Kosi River with views of barley and wheat fields. Our overnight stay will be in Phakding. We will rest and rejuvenate in a cozy lodge after 4 hours of trekking with 50 meters ascending and descending 240 meters.

Begin your trek by ascending to Jorsale at an altitude of 2800m, following the route along the Dudh Kosi River. Then cross the river via a suspension bridge and proceed to ascend rapidly, gaining 600m in altitude to reach Namche Bazaar. Namche Bazaar is a bustling Sherpa town, offering a range of amenities including numerous shops, a post office, a bank, and a quaint small monastery. Look out for Tibetan and Chinese market products that are brought by yak from Nang Pa La, located at a breathtaking altitude of 5700m. For accommodation, you can stay overnight in a cozy lodge. The trek takes around 6 hours to complete with 930 meters ascending and 100 meters descending.

During your stay in Namche for acclimatization, you’ll have a day to explore the area. You can visit the Saturday market where local and Tibetan traders gather, or check out the nearby Everest View Hotel for panoramic views of Everest and surrounding peaks. Take the opportunity to explore other nearby attractions and make the most of your time at this elevation.

The trek to Thame, a village located in a beautiful valley, is both scenic and culturally rich. Thame is a traditional Sherpa village and offers insights into the local way of life. It is a small Sherpa village below the mountain wall of Kongde Peak. You’ll spend the night in Thame and then return to Namche on the following day.

We start by walking to Phumki, which is at an altitude of 3250m. It’s a lovely village, and the climb to Tengboche at 3860m will take about 3 hours and is relatively easy. Tengboche is the largest Gompa monastery led by a great lama. Make sure to visit the monastery when you get there. From Tengboche, you’ll have a great view of Ama Dablam, Everest, Lhotse, and Nuptse. You’ll spend the night in a lodge after 4.5 hours of trekking.

After a short descent through a lush moss-draped forest, you will come across Mani walls. You then cross the Imja Khola using a suspension bridge and start climbing towards Pangboche at an elevation of 3900m. Upon reaching Pangboche, you have the opportunity to visit a monastery that houses a yeti scalp.

Continuing on your journey, you walk through a birch forest and gently ascend to a grassy area. We will camp in Pheriche, situated at an altitude of 4252m. Pheriche is home to the Himalayan Rescue Association clinic, a non-profit organization that operates medical clinics. You will spend the night in a cozy lodge after trekking for a total of 6 hours.

Today’s trek involves a three-hour climb to Duglha, situated at 3500m. From Duglha, you will face a steep climb for another three hours to reach Lobuche at 4925m. The trail offers extraordinary views of Nuptse. You’ll spend the night in a lodge in Lobuche.

You start with a trek to Gorak Shep, which takes about 3.5 hours. After lunch, you will make a steep climb to Kala Patthar at 5550m. Kala Patthar is a prominent viewpoint that provides panoramic views of Everest and surrounding peaks. After spending some time at the top, you will descend back to Lobuche. This entire day’s trek will take around 6 hours.

We hike to Everest Base Camp, the starting point for climbers attempting to summit Everest. Take time to explore the area and witness the glory of the peaks. Although Mt. Everest is hidden between Mt. Lhotse and Mt. Nuptse, the views of other mountains are simply incredible. You will return to Lobuche on the same day. This round trip involves trekking through rugged terrain and offers a close-up view of Everest’s base camp activities. You will stay overnight in Lobuche.

You’ll descend from Lobuche to Dingboche, situated at 4530m. This trek takes about 5 hours and involves a gradual descent through the valley. Dingboche is a small village that serves as a good rest stop for trekkers. Spend the night in a lodge.

The trek continues with a climb to Chukung at 4730m, and then on to Island Peak Base Camp, located at 5087m. The trek takes around 6 hours and involves ascending through rugged terrain to reach the base camp. You’ll stay in a tent at the base camp.

From the base camp, you’ll climb to the high camp at 5600m. This section involves some technical climbing and takes about 5 hours. The high camp is set up to prepare for the ascent of Island Peak. You’ll stay in a tent here.

Today’s trek begins with a slow and easy ascent night climb to reach 6000m. Then, you’ll tackle a 45° slope over 100 meters to reach the ridge. The final stretch involves a 30-minute walk along the ridge to the summit of Island Peak, 6189m. After reaching the summit, you’ll descend back to Base Camp. This day’s trek involves around 7 hours of climbing and descending.

We descend from Island Peak Base Camp to Dingboche, then continue to Tengboche Monastery at 3867m. The trek provides views of Ama Dablam, which is renowned for its beauty. It takes about 6 hours, and you’ll stay overnight in a lodge in Tengboche.

You’ll visit the Tengboche monastery before descending back to Namche. It takes around 6 hours and allows you to enjoy the views and atmosphere of the town one last time. Spend the night in a lodge.

The trek from Namche to Lukla takes approximately 6 hours. This final stretch of the trek leads back to Lukla, where you’ll spend the night in a lodge.

Today marks the last day of our memorable trek. We will be returning to Kathmandu by catching a flight from Lukla. In case flights are not available, you have the option to fly to Ramechhap and then drive the remaining distance back to Kathmandu. This signals the end of our trek.
