The Snow Leopard Trek is one of the most popular treks in Ladakh. Animal enthusiasts, experts, and nature lovers from around the world come to Rumbak Valley in Ladakh to catch a glimpse of the elusive snow leopard. As winter sets in and snow blankets the high Himalayas, food becomes scarce, making herbivores migrate to lower elevations. Animals descend below the tree line and seek sustenance in the relatively more lush valleys and on grassy slopes. Among these migrating animals is the Bharal, also known as the Blue Sheep. This Himalayan wild sheep is found throughout the high Himalayas and attracts the attention of the region’s most elusive predator.

Predators like snow leopards are usually territorial, but they may need to move under certain conditions. In sub-zero temperatures, Bharal seeks food and warmth at lower elevations, and snow leopards follow them to survive. During the cold winter months, the snow leopard, known as the “grey ghost of the Himalayas,” appears in the lower valleys, making it the best time to track them.

The population of Snow Leopards in India is estimated to be around 500-600. We will search for them in Hemis National Park, a 4,000 sq. km high-altitude area ideal for snow leopards. Although Hemis has the potential to support nearly 200 leopards, the actual numbers are likely to be less than half of that. Despite the harsh conditions, a small human population lives in the park, tending livestock. The valleys, ridges, and peaks of Hemis sometimes become a battleground as humans and animals fight to struggle for survival. The Snow Leopards are often persecuted for stalking and killing domestic animals. Hemis National Park is also home to the Shapu, a rare wild sheep species unique to the Indian Himalayas.

Itinerary

Upon your arrival in New Delhi in the early morning, our team will greet you and transfer you to the pre-booked hotel. You have the morning free to relax after your journey. In the afternoon, you will explore Old Delhi at a leisurely pace. After a day of sightseeing, you will return to the hotel for breakfast and an overnight stay.

After breakfast, our guided tour of New Delhi will begin. The itinerary includes visits to the National Museum, which houses a vast collection of art and artifacts, and Humayun’s Tomb, a sample of Mughal architecture. In the afternoon, you’ll take a relaxing walk in Lodhi Gardens, a serene park with historical tombs and lush greenery. You will have lunch at the Lodhi Restaurant. Later, you’ll visit the Qutb Minar, an iconic historical tower. It is one of the UNESCO heritage sites of India. If you have the energy, you can enjoy the evening ceremony at Bangla Sahib Gurdwara, a prominent Sikh temple. You’ll return to the hotel for another overnight stay.

You’ll have an early morning transfer to the domestic airport for a flight to Leh. The one-hour flight provides breathtaking views of the Ladakh Himalayas ranges. Upon arrival in Leh, you’ll be assisted and transferred to a Ladakhi-style hotel. The rest of the day you can spend resting to acclimatize to the high altitude. Stay overnight at the hotel.

Today’s morning is dedicated to further acclimatization. In the afternoon, you’ll take an orientation walk through the Tibetan Bazaar, which shows a glimpse into local life and crafts. You’ll also visit Leh Palace, which stands above the bazaar and provides excellent views of the valley and surrounding mountains, including Stok Kangri Peak. After this exploration, you’ll return to the hotel for dinner and an overnight stay.

Our day starts with breakfast before heading out on a full-day excursion through the Indus Valley. Prepare a packed lunch and take it with you on your way. The first stop is Stok Palace, a 17th-century residence of Ladakh’s Royal family, where you’ll visit the Palace Museum. Next, you’ll head to Shey Palace, the summer palace of the Ladakhi kings. From Shey, a one-hour hike through green fields takes you to Thikse Monastery, often referred to as the “Little Potala” due to its resemblance to the Potala Palace in Lhasa. The day concludes with a visit to Hemis Monastery, the wealthiest monastery in Ladakh. You’ll return to your hotel in the evening for an overnight stay. It involves 2 hours of walking.

In the morning, we start our trek by driving to Latho, 6km away from Leh. We cross a wooden bridge over the Indus River. Once porters have loaded the equipment, you’ll begin your trek. We begin the trek along a trail that zigzags along the river for about an hour until it enters the gorge to the south. Then we continue to the confluence of a stream from Rumbak Gorge where it joins the Indus. Here, you might spot early signs of Snow Leopards, such as scrapes or ancient etchings. The trek continues for another 3 km to Zingchen, where you’ll set up camp among poplar trees. The altitude here is 3300 meters. It takes 4 hours of walking.

Today’s trek takes you through a narrow gorge up to Husing. Along the way, we might have the chance to see our first Bharal, which is the main prey species of the Ounce. We may also come across fresh signs of Snow Leopard rock scents on this trail. The site is about 50 minutes from Zingchen, surrounded by rugged, broken slopes at a junction where two side valleys meet. It’s a good place for spotting snow leopards and enjoying the views of the snow-capped peaks beyond Rumbak.

After lunch, we’ll trek up to Tarbung, keeping an eye out for Snow Leopard signs and possible sightings. We’ll stay overnight at the Husing/Tarbung junction, at an altitude of 3700m after a 4-hour walk.

Today, we will be trekking up to Rumbak Sumdo. The narrow gorge suddenly opens into a wide valley surrounded by high mountains, including the Stok Kangri. Sumdo is the confluence of three valleys with Rumbak hamlet to the east, Lungnak to the south, and the Kharlung towards the west. We continue our trek up to Rumbak, a small hamlet consisting of 10-11 houses situated at an altitude of 4050m. After lunch, we return to the Sumdo region to look for “grey ghosts” in the opposite valley. The trek will involve 4 hours of walking.

In the morning, you’ll trek into the Housing Valley, known for regular Snow Leopard movements. You can spend the day searching for Snow Leopards and observing their prey species, such as Bharal, Shapu, and Himalayan Ibex. After a day of exploration, you’ll return to the camp at Husing/Tarbung junction for an overnight stay. The trek involves 4 to 5 hours of walking.

Today, you’ll hike to Yurutse, located at the base of the Ganda La Pass to the west, past Sumdo. This area is an ideal habitat for Argali (Great Tibetan Sheep) and is known for sightings of Tibetan Wolves. Wolf sightings depend upon cat movement as they are rivals for the same prey species. Get the chance to experience Ladakhi hospitality as we will be invited for a meal by a family in Rumbak. It will be a wonderful chance to spend time with the locals and get a rare glimpse of their unique culture. After our visit, returned to camp for the night following 5 hours of walking.

You’ll start the day with a trek up to the pass above Rumbak, at an altitude of 4500 meters. The trek then continues back to the junction camp via the rugged Husing Valley. During this trek, keep a lookout for Snow Leopards and their tracks. After the day’s trek, you’ll stay overnight at the junction camp. It took 4 hours of walking.

After breakfast, you’ll leave Rumbak and drive back to Leh, a journey that takes about 2 hours. Once in Leh, you’ll check into your hotel and have the rest of the afternoon free to relax or explore the town at your leisure.

It is our last day in Leh. Take a flight back to Delhi in the morning. Upon arrival, you’ll be transferred to your hotel in Delhi. The afternoon is yours to relax. In the evening, you will be taken to the airport for your onward journey.
