The Langtang Trek is a moderate to difficult trek that takes approximately 7 to 13 days to complete. The trek will guide you through dense, vibrant jungles, charming traditional villages, and up to the high-altitude sanctuary of Kyanjin Gompa.
Unlike the heavily traveled paths of the Annapurna and Everest regions, the Tamang region of Langtang offers a unique opportunity to explore high peaks and immerse yourself in the ambiance of high mountains without having to traverse high-altitude passes.
This itinerary promises unforgettable days of trekking through landscapes adorned with rhododendron forests and Himalayan pine trees, followed by serene pastures where yak herds peacefully graze.
Similarly, in the lower region, you’ll have the chance to immerse yourself in the Tamang culture as you visit villages like Syabrubensi, Sherpagaon, and Thulosyabru. As you ascend, you’ll encounter summer hamlets still utilized by shepherds and their yaks. The pinnacle of the trek is Kyanjin Ri, which stands tall at an impressive 4,600 meters.
When you trek to Langtang you should get two permits. They are the TIMM card (Trekkers’ Information Management System) and the Langtang National Park Entry Permit.
The TIMS card is available in three types: green for individuals at $20, blue for organized groups at $10, and pink for SAARC nations at $6.
You can purchase the TIMS either in the branch of the Nepal Tourism Board in Kathmandu and Pokhara or at the Trekkers’ Agencies Association of Nepal (TAAN) Secretariat. To get your TIMS card fill out the application form and provide a copy of your passport and three passport-size photographs.
Likewise, the Langtang National Park Entry Permit is required by trekkers and costs $30 (excluding VAT), whereas SAARC citizens get a discounted rate of $15. Children under 10 will not have to pay for the ticket. You can also obtain such permits beginning routes like Syabrubesi and Dhunche.
Moreover, the permit should be secured by the trekkers before beginning the trek though they are available at the trailhead if required. Keep in mind, that these passes are checked at different checkpoints throughout the hike, so it’s important to have them with you all the time.
On the first day of our Langtang trek, we will take a local bus from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi. The journey usually takes around 7-8 hours as we pass through the Trisulu road and continue on an off-road track. In case you prefer to travel on a private jeep, feel free to contact the GST team.
Our trek will take us uphill to the Tibetan village of Khamjing, situated at an altitude of 2280 meters. We will pass through a dense forest, surrounded by lush greenery and the sweet melodies of chirping birds.
The Tamang people, who have settled here for three centuries, are of Tibetan origin. During the trek, we will have the opportunity to visit a Buddhist monastery too. The trek will take around 7 hours and involve an elevation gain of 1083 meters.
The trek route follows the riverside before ascending to Peringharka. You’ll enjoy views of the mountains throughout the five-hour trek, which includes a 467-meter ascent.
On this day, we will depart from Pering Kharka and embark on a longer and more challenging trek along rugged off-beaten trails. As we walk, we will be accompanied by the soothing and refreshing sounds of the Langtang River.
Similarly, upon crossing the river, we will arrive at Langtang Village, and further ahead, we will reach Mundu. The treks take around four hours.
You’ll trek to Kyanjin which takes about 2.5 hours. Once you arrive, you can enjoy a day excursion in the surrounding area which offers stunning views of Langtang Lirung. Afterward, you can return to Kyanjin.
Although there are a few high climbs along the way, the trails remain comparatively easier. From this location, you can see a large amount of ice coursing through Langtang Lirung. The total trekking time is 6.5 hours with an elevation gain of 260m.
On this particular day, there is an exciting excursion planned for all the trekkers. The destination is the majestic Tserko Ri, which is situated at an awe-inspiring altitude of 4984 meters above sea level. For those who are feeling adventurous, the trek to the top of the Ri promises to be a thrilling experience, with its panoramic view of the Langtang peak.
In addition to this, there is also an option to hike up to Kyanjin Ri, which is another popular destination among hikers. However, for those who prefer a more relaxed pace, there’s an option to stay back in the Kyangjin village and explore its local exquisiteness.
As we begin our journey back home from day 7, we’ll be retracing our footsteps and reliving all the unforgettable moments we experienced on our way to the top. Our first stop will be Chhunama, and we’ll be heading downhill from Kyanjin.
The descent will take approximately seven hours of trekking, and we’ll be descending 1050m. During the downhill, it is essential to be alert and cautious to ensure our safety, as the terrain can be challenging and slippery at times.
After leaving Chhunama, we will continue our descent towards Thulo Syabru, traversing through a dense forest of pine and juniper trees. The trek will take approximately 5 hours as we descend a total of 580 meters. Once we reach our destination, we will spend the night at cozy and comfortable lodges.
After trekking for 3 hours, we descended 250 meters to reach Dhunche. Most people pass through Dhunche on their way to Gosaikunda as it is the closest major point along the highway. Dhunche is a Tamang village where you can interact with local villagers and learn about their culture. You’ll also get to view Ganesh Himal on the way.
After bidding farewell to the spectacular journey through the Langtang region, today we are embarking on our return journey from Dhunche to Kathmandu.
We have made arrangements for our transportation back to Kathmandu via a local bus, but if you prefer a more private and comfortable option, we can also arrange for a private jeep.
We have several suggestions if you’re still interested in exploring more trekking packages in the Langtang region.
Firstly, consider customizing an additional 3 days for the Gosainkunda Lakes. You can request our itinerary “Langtang and Gosainkunda Lakes NCE6.” The Gosaikunda Trek ends with the breathtaking sight of fresh, crystal-clear lakes after a week-long journey through dense forests, villages rich in Tibetan culture, and awe-inspiring mountain vistas.
Secondly, there’s the Helambu and Gosainkunda Lakes trek of 9 days (NCE5). This itinerary begins at low altitudes in the Sherpa region of Helambu, gradually ascending to Laurebinayak Pass at 4600m before descending to the Gosainkund Lakes.
Lastly, there’s the Langtang and Ganja La Pass 13-day trek (NCE7). This high-altitude itinerary involves a moderately technical crossing of a pass at 5122m. It provides a unique experience of trekking in tents at altitude.
