Your Journey to Annapurna Ridge Trails

If you are ready to experience a trail to Annapurna Ridge you can start from Kathmandu and withdraw into the depths of the Himalayas. Your trip starts with your journey to Pokhara, where you will spend overnight in Bandipur. It is a gorgeous village newly restored by the Newar people in a great way. Bandipur lies on the ancient trade route linking India and Tibet hence visitors have varied options to investigate both the historical fabric of the city as well as its natural surroundings.

On the following day, you can trek to Seti Valley, the valley of the Annapurna range, located at the bottom of the valley. You can begin your hike on the way to the ridges here, which allow you to behold the highest peaks of the Annapurna range. The greatest high peaks of the world concentrated in this area include Macchapuchare, Annapurna, and Lamjung Himal.

Trekkers can spend the nights at Gachowk and Astam in environmentally friendly hotels. The next day you can take a trek to Dhampus village passing along a ridge which is an easier way to reach there. From here, just take a short walk through the rhododendron on the way to the Australian Camp. Also, you will feel sunrise over the Himalayan range while passing typical villages with colorful houses, slate roofs, and even round thatched roofs.

The first three days of the trek will take you through rural parts of the country and you will observe people at harvest or plowing time depending on the season. Alternatively, you might encounter shepherds who care for goats on your way. Along with that, you will always have an incredible view of the Annapurna range, which looks so close because of its proximity.

Itinerary

Upon your arrival at Pokhara from Kathmandu, you will meet your guide in front of your hotel reception desk. From there, you will continue to the Seti Valley. After the scenic drive, you can get off the bus at the hot springs and then take your leisurely hike along the right bank of the Seti River.

The path gently goes through the Gurung villages and reaches the big open plateau between the Seti and Lasti Khola. On the way, you will find houses painted in ochre and white and decorated with beautiful carvings, surrounded by fields of barley, corn, or wheat, depending on the season. You will encounter locals who belong to different ethnic backgrounds, such as Hindus, Brahmins, Chettris, Newars, and Dalits, primarily, in this region.

During your walk, you will see the local life going on with the people doing their daily chores. You will watch men using oxen and the plow in the field, women wearing colorful blouses while gathering grass, and children from school going home. This provides a rare glimpse into rural Nepal, a region that is not often visited by typical tourists.

You will end the day’s trip at an eco-lodge that shows local architecture and will serve you an unforgettable dinner from fresh garden produce. On the first day of the trek, we went for a one-hour drive and then hiked for 4.5 hours at an easy pace.

On day 2, the adventure will start with a perfect view of the mighty Himalayas, including the Lamjung Himal, Annapurna II, and Annapurna IV, and a wonderful sunrise. As you follow your path, you will get to the plateau, a true patchwork of yellow, beige, and green fields, and their edges highlighted by purple flowers.

Traveling along the rural roads, you’ll notice women in the fields and lumberjacks with their traditional two-handed saws making their way into the nearby forest. If you get tired and hungry along the way you can always have a picnic lunch. After refueling, your journey continues as you climb up the forest until you reach the small village of Astam. Astam is one of the locations featuring the panoramic view of the Annapurna range, the morning rays and sunset glow are two of the magnificent views.

The last stop in your journey is the eco-lodge at the apex of the slope offering incredible sights of Machhapuchare, Annapurna South, and Annapurna II. After a 4-hour exciting hike, your day will end with a room with an attached bathroom where you will have a wonderful chance to relax and watch the stunning view around you.

As the sun rises above the snow-capped peaks of Annapurna, Machhapuchhare, and Mardi Himal mountains, you will have a warm breakfast on the terrace. After that, start the hike by taking the ridge trail which provides a magnificent view of the Gobhang Khola valley leading to Pokhara.

From the northern side, you will see the Machhapuchchhre Mountain, which is almost 7000 meters in height. Also, you must notice the ancient village of Astam, built with stones and soil, which has an appeal characterized by the unique ochre and white colors.

All the roofs in the neighborhood are made of slate and some of the houses with roundhouses still have thatched roofs. Such houses are uncommon now in Nepal and hence, they hold some special sign of importance.

You can also witness the mixed view of red poinsettias and bougainvilleas, green wheat fields, and yellow mustard which gives a charming prospect.

Apart from the beautiful contrast between the white snow-capped Annapurna and the greenery, you will probably enjoy never-ending views of a huge range of blooming fields and farms as you walk. Our trek ultimately takes us to the Dhampus village which is on the hilltop. We will spend the night there in a lodge. The whole hiking duration is approximately 4 hours.

Our 4th-day trek begins with an enjoyable morning meal on a sunny terrace. On morning tea or coffee, you’ll likely be surrounded by the Majestic beauty of the Machhapuchhare, a sacred peak of 6,997 meters protected for centuries by Gurung people and has never been attempted by climbers.

We bid our welcoming hosts and then trek along the trail to reach the new Dhampus. We keep on hiking and find ourselves in a vibrant rhododendron forest. Our route eventually takes us past the Australian Camp, a new campsite on old pastures and features cozy lodges.

These lodges obtain some of the best picturesque landscapes in the world full of snowclad Himalayas. At the end of 3.5 hours of hiking, we check in our lodge to relax and slow down, taking in the breathtaking panorama of the mountains.

We will start our day by witnessing the sunrise over the majestic Himalayan range. After that, we will have breakfast and then walk downhill to Kande. From there, we will return to Pokhara by vehicle and check in at the hotel.

For the adventurous, there’s the option to explore Phewa Lake by boat or kayak or immerse yourself in the rich culture of a nearby Tibetan village. (Feel free to contact us for more details) We will spend the night in a hotel in Pokhara, which includes breakfast. The trip will consist of 2 hours of hiking and 3 hours of driving.

From Pokhara, you can journey back to Kathmandu by a comfortable bus ride. For a faster and more scenic option, we also offer a private vehicle and flight to Kathmandu, allowing you to choose the travel style that best suits your needs. (Availability and pricing for the private vehicle and flight option can be provided upon request).

FAQs

Generally, a moderate level of fitness is recommended. Along the trails, there are some moderate climbs and declines on a complicated surface. Earlier, if you practice your exercise regularly, you will undoubtedly enjoy your outing more than you can imagine.

The must-have list for hiking includes strong-heeled boots, a warm sleeping bag, breathable clothes for different temperatures, a raincoat, and a backpack. You are strongly recommended to use trekking poles for more reliable support, especially on the descent.

Some popular options for the Annapurna Ridge trek include the Poon Hill Trek for those who are seeking a shorter version and the challenging Annapurna Circuit trek which is only suitable for experienced trekkers. The most wanted treks include Annapurna Base Camp Trek, Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek, and Annapurna Sanctuary Trek, which is the most difficult among these choices.

The difficulty elevates or reduces, according to which road you decide to take. Annapurna Base Camp Trek is rated medium difficulty, whereas the routes of the Annapurna Sanctuary involve steeper trails and higher altitudes.

You will need an Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP card) and a Trekkers Information Management System (TIMS) card for all treks in the Annapurna Conservation Area (ACA) region. This permit can be obtained in Kathmandu or Pokhara.

ATMs are rather limited and inconsistent on Annapurna Ridge Trails. The trekkers must bring enough cash in Nepali Rupees, as many guesthouses don't accept card payments.
