The Druk Path Trek takes you on a 9-day adventure through Bhutan’s diverse landscapes and rich cultural heritage. The Druk foot trail connects the cities of Paro and Thimphu Valley and is known as one of Bhutan’s most popular trekking routes. It offers a journey through some of the kingdom’s most untouched natural scenery.
Your journey begins with a scenic flight from Kathmandu to Paro, where you’re treated to panoramic views of the Himalayas. The trek unfolds with visits to Paro Dzong, a majestic fortress steeped in history, and the awe-inspiring Tiger’s Nest Monastery. As you trek deeper into the trail, you’ll traverse through verdant orchards and tranquil forests, ascending gently to campsites like Jele Dzong and Simkota Lake. Along the way, you’ll encounter yak herders and witness their traditional way of life amidst the mountain backdrop.
Crossing high mountain passes such as Jangchu La and Labana, each providing incredible vistas of snow-capped peaks like Chomolhari, adds to the trek’s allure. Cultural immersion continues in Thimphu, the vibrant capital of Bhutan. You can visit the ancient monasteries and the art school setting, which offer insights into Bhutanese craftsmanship and spirituality.
The journey culminates in Paro, where you reflect on your unforgettable experiences before bidding farewell to this Himalayan kingdom. Experienced guides will inform you of local traditions and natural wonders throughout the journey, providing a memorable and enriching journey.
Start your adventure with a flight from Kathmandu to Paro, flying over the Himalayan range. As the plane circles over Kathmandu, you can enjoy views from Annapurna to Ganesh Himal while passing by Manaslu. When you turn east, you will get a chance to see the magnificent eight-thousander peaks such as Cho Oyu, the black pyramid of Everest, Makalu, and Kangchenjunga.
Afterward, we will fly over Bhutan’s wooded hills and quickly descend into Paro Valley. After a few bumps, we land and step out into the pure, fresh air. Upon landing in Bhutan, your Bhutanese guide will warmly welcome you and take you to visit Paro Dzong, an impressive fortress. You will spend the night at the Kyichu Hotel or a similar accommodation in Paro.
After breakfast each morning, we begin our climb to the Tiger’s Nest Monastery, Taktsang Hermitage, at 9 AM. The ascent starts in a pine forest, and some people choose to climb on horseback. We reach a promontory with a fantastic view of the monastery, but horses cannot continue from this point.
We descend into a narrow gorge via stone stairs and then ascend to reach the monastery around 11 AM. At 12:30 PM, we hear the sacred trumpets echoing through the gorges. We leave the monastery to the monks and descend the stairs to return to the valley. Later, we visit Bhutan’s oldest monastery, Dzungtse. We spent another night at the Kyichu Hotel or equivalent in Paro.
Today, our trek begins above the museum with a gentle climb through orchards and villages. We ascend through the forest to pastures and camp at Jele Dzong. Zele Dzong is on the top of the mountain and isolated from Paro Valley. The journey includes a 1-hour car ride and a 5-hour trek covering 10 km. Stay overnight in a tented camp.
Today, we will ascend gradually. The trail follows a ridge, crossing through an alpine forest and rhododendron fields. Along the way, we will visit the Jili fort and continue through forests and pastures. Our campsite for the night will be at Jangchulakha after a 4-hour trek covering 10 km.
Today, we trek along ridges to reach the Jangchu La pass at 4200m. On clear days, you can enjoy breathtaking views of snowy mountains, including Chomolhari, and the valley below. After that, we descend to Jimilangtsho Lake, where we will camp by the serene waters. Today’s trek involves 7 hours of walking, covering a distance of 11 kilometers.
The trail leads you from one ridge to another, passing by Janetsho Lake and ascending a steep slope until you reach the camp at an altitude of 4090 meters. You can enjoy a stunning view of Simkota Lake, renowned for its trout. The trek takes approximately four hours, and you will spend the night at the camp.
We begin our day with an exhilarating roller coaster trail, navigating through ups and downs until we reach the Labana Pass at 4200 meters. From there, we continue to Phumo La, which is situated at 3712 meters and offers a gorgeous view of Mount Gangkar Puensum, the highest unclimbed peak in the world at 7570 meters.
After soaking in the breathtaking scenery, we begin a 2-hour descent through a beautiful forest filled with conifers and rhododendrons. Finally, we arrive at a road where our vehicle is waiting to transport us to Thimphu. We spend the night in a comfortable hotel upon reaching Thimphu. In total, we covered a distance of 14 kilometers in 7 hours.
After our trek, we stayed in Thimphu and explored the city, starting with the beautiful ancient Changangkha Lhakhang temple. This temple was built by the son of the founder of the Drukpa school. The temple is a thick whitewashed stone building with painted wood. Thimphu residents bring their young children here for blessings every month until they are six months old. We witnessed a blessing ceremony where a mother and her son shared chocolate cake, and a father brought his newborn to the altar. The old lama blessed the newborn with a few drops of oil. Outside, there was a small temple dedicated to the serpent god where milk offerings were made.
Next, we visited an art school where students learned sculpture, molding, weaving, and painting in a calm and soothing environment. We then enjoyed a Bhutanese lunch in a sunny garden. After lunch, we went to visit the Textile Museum which contained the country’s most beautiful fabrics. We also explored the Tashi Choe Dzong fort, which housed ministries on one side and the Buddhist clergy on the other. The walls were decorated with superb mandalas. After exploring the monasteries, we drove back to Paro and spent the night at the Kyichu Hotel or equivalent.
On the final day, we transfer you to the airport for your departure, marking the end of an amazing journey through the rich culture of Bhutan. Our representative will bid you farewell.
