Trip Overview

Dolpo lies behind the Dhaulagiri Massif and has remained isolated due to the absence of roads. Although a rough road now connects Dolpo to Mustang, it is rarely used. Similarly, the region is a crucial passage for yak caravans transporting goods from Tibet to southern Dolpo and onward to India.

There are rugged terrain, high peaks, and pristine landscapes in this region. It also offers scenic beauty, hidden valleys, and ancient shrines like Shey Gompa. Likewise, the valley preserves its unique culture closely tied to Tibetan traditions. The predominant religion in Dolpo is Bon, which is evident from the numerous monasteries dedicated to this faith. Bon predates Buddhism and has deep historical roots in Tibet.

Similarly, the main attraction of this trek is the deepest lake in Nepal Phoksundo Lake. Adventure-seeking trekkers often go on this challenging trek to visit Phoksundo Lake. They are treated to panoramic views of the Himalayan peaks, including Kanjiroba, Dhaulagiri, and Annapurna.

Your Journey to Dolpo

The Dolpo region is the most remote district in Nepal and is also known as “Ba Yul” or a hidden valley. Our 16-day trek will commence from Kathmandu. To reach Dolpo, we will take a plane to Juphal. From there, the trail follows the Tarap River, leading us to the sizable village of Dho Tarap after five days of walking.

We will also take a day of acclimatization in the Dho Valley, allowing visitors to explore monasteries and hamlets. Afterward, a round trip to 4400 meters further perfects acclimatization before embarking on the challenging two passes above 5000 meters. During these high-altitude treks, you’ll traverse a mineral-rich and mysterious landscape devoid of human habitation.

Similarly, you should look out for the Bharal (blue sheep), the only member of the genus Pseudois. You will also find traces of the elusive snow leopard. The pinnacle of the journey awaits at Phoksundo Lake. With its stunning turquoise waters shimmering under the clear blue sky, the lake is a true gem of natural beauty.

You will also explore and behold the beauty of Phoksundo Lake and the beautiful Phoksundo Waterfall. Its pristine waters and vibrant color make it one of the most beautiful lakes in the region. Throughout your trek, you’ll be immersed in Tibetan culture, experiencing the rich heritage and traditions that define Dolpo. After completing the trek, return to Kathmandu via a flight from Nepalgung to Jupal and then to Kathmandu.

Itinerary

On our first day of the trek, we will take a flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj. During the flight, you can witness the Himalayan range. It takes one hour of flight to reach Nepalgunj.

We will take a flight from Nepalganj to Juphal. Upon arrival in Juphal, we’ll start on a scenic trek towards Dunai. The journey will take approximately 2 hours, with an elevation gain of 70 meters followed by a descent of 405 meters.

Today, we will continue our walk alongside the Barbung River towards Tarakot. The trail promises stunning scenery, with deep gorges, isolated villages nestled amidst the mountains, and towering pines lining the route. The journey will take approximately five hours, covering an elevation gain of 395 meters to reach Tarakot. We will spend the night there.

We have a challenging day ahead as we walk on a 6-hour trek to reach Chauki. The trail promises both uphill and downhill sections, with an ascent of 810 meters and a descent of 150 meters. Upon arrival, we will enjoy a well-deserved lunch in Chauki, filling our energy for the journey ahead.

Trekking from Lahini to Nauri Odar will be a challenging day, navigating a difficult trail carved into the rugged rock terrain. Our destination for the day is Nauri Odar, also known as the “cave of the blue sheep,” where we will set up camp. The trek will span approximately 7 hours, involving an ascent of 700 meters as we make our way through this remote and striking landscape.

We have arrived at Dho, the main village in the valley, where we will set up camp surrounded by chortens and two significant Bon monasteries. The inhabitants are mostly of Tibetan descent and are notably dressed like the Kyampa warriors of Eastern Tibet. The trek for the day is expected to take approximately 6 hours, with an elevation gain of 140 meters.

Our journey takes a well-deserved break at Dho village, the highest-altitude human settlement in Nepal, located at 4,080 meters. It’s a place where the air thins and the views are breathtaking.

Explore the many Buddhist monasteries and chortens scattered across the valley, each a testament to the region’s deep faith. To truly immerse ourselves in the culture, we’ll have the opportunity to witness a puja, a Buddhist prayer ceremony filled with the rhythmic sounds of drums and horns.

After a beautiful day spent exploring the Dho village, we are eagerly looking forward to our next destination: Numa La Base Camp. Our journey will lead us through a plain valley adorned with patches of vibrant green grass on either side of a river.

Continuing our trek, we will pass through Modo and Tokyu villages, both of which offer breathtaking views of the valley. The trek to the Base Camp will span four hours and involve a 400-meter elevation gain. Upon reaching our destination, we rest and rejuvenate ourselves, surrounded by the tranquil majesty of the mountains.

Our early walk begins with a tough ascent to reach the ridge top of Baga-la at 5238 meters after breakfast at Numa la base camp. The trail provides an excellent view of the Tarap Valley and Tibetan peaks.

After that, we’ll go down into a deserted area. This area offers spectacular dry landscapes, mountain settlements, and various civilizations. Above all, you will get the opportunity to witness rare species including black bears, blue sheep, mountain goats, and the rare snow leopard. The walk takes 7 hours and includes an 800m ascent and a 607m descent.

On this day, we will start our trek through the passage of Baga La Pass. We will witness the scenic views of the Kangiroba Himal, which stands at 6882 meters. We’ll go through the pine forest, and as we leave the forest behind, the country and vegetation will change to pasture fields and alpine shrubs most of the way to Ringmo. Then, we will descend to Phoksundo Lake. The journey will take 7 to 8 hours of trekking with 946 meters of elevation gain and 48 meters of descent.

Similarly, legend tells of Padmasambhava, a revered Buddhist saint, who arrived in the 8th century to vanquish mountain demons. Here, he chased away a Bon demon who, in exchange for safe passage, offered the villagers a priceless turquoise. However, Padmasambhava transformed the turquoise into dung, leading the villagers to believe they were tricked. In retaliation, the demon caused a flood, drowning the village in the turquoise waters of Phoksundo Lake.

Take a rest and exploration day at Ringmo to allow your body to acclimatize to the higher altitude. This free day offers a perfect opportunity to visit Ringmo village and its gompa. You can also simply lounge around and soak in the superb views of Phoksundo Lake and the nearby peaks, such as Kagmara. Wander through Ringmo Village, where the population is a blend of Magar and Bothias, and immerse yourself in the local culture and serene surroundings.

After a delightful day spent at Ringmo, we will begin our descent, winding our way through lush forests and colorful flower meadows. Along the path next to the Suli Gad, we will make our way towards Reji village. This journey involves approximately 4 hours of trekking, during which we will descend 793 meters.

As we descend along the trail, we will be surrounded by the serene beauty of Tibetan-style villages, offering a unique glimpse into their cultural heritage. The fields are adorned with vibrant patches of mustard and cannabis plants.

Along the way, we will be treated to panoramic views of majestic mountain ranges, cascading waterfalls, and dense forests that echo with the sounds of wildlife. The gentle slope of the trail allows for a six-hour trek, covering a descent of 280 meters.

During our journey, we will visit the village of Rohagaon, situated at an altitude of 2970m. The village is known for its small Buddhist monastery and its residents who primarily follow Tibetan culture. Additionally, some Magars, Chetris, and Buratoki, who wear Afghan turbans, also reside in the village. Rohagaon is renowned in Nepal for its goat population, with the villagers rearing many goats.

Further, the trekking route will involve a 5-hour journey with an ascent of 310m and a descent of 830m.

As we follow the gently sloping trail, we will pass through Sulighat on our way to Jhupal. Along the way, we will be treated to spectacular views of the mountains and Jhupal below.

When reaching Jhupal, you will see a beautiful Chorten gate and have the opportunity to explore Buddhist paintings of Mandalas and important Buddhist figures. The walk from Dunai to Jhupal takes approximately 5 hours, so it is recommended to stay the night there.

After completing our 16-day trek, we will board a flight from Jhupal to Nepalgunj. Upon arrival in Nepalgunj, we will then take the next available flight to Kathmandu.
