Rolwaling is a beautiful Himalayan region located west of Khumbu, right on the border with Tibet. This sparsely populated valley is renowned for its exceptional views of towering peaks and its serene, mystical atmosphere. The trek via Rolwaling takes you through small Sherpa villages, where the rich culture and warm hospitality of the locals offer a truly immersive experience. This region’s mystical power has attracted pilgrims, trekkers, mountaineers, and spiritual seekers for generations.

Continuing your journey through Rolwaling, you’ll visit ancient monasteries and high-altitude hermitages, each showing a glimpse into the spiritual life that flourishes in these remote mountains. The trekking route varies from the rolling hills to the more rugged sections of the Himalayas. After challenging climbs, you will get spectacular views from high vantage points, where the vastness and majesty of the Himalayas are on full display.

You will also get an opportunity to connect with the Tamang and Sherpa communities. These warm and friendly people welcome you into their homes and lives. They will share their traditions and stories with travelers. The trail itself is well-trodden, used by porters and shepherds heading to the summer grazing pastures at Beding.
A highlight of the Rolwaling trek is the excursion to the high pastures of Na and the ascent to the turquoise lake of Dudh Pokhari. These pristine landscapes are awe-inspiring and you will get moments of peace and reflection amidst nature’s grandeur. The views of the 7000-meter Gauri Shanker and its neighboring peaks are unforgettable.

The trek’s gradual ascent and the absence of high passes make it accessible yet still challenging and rewarding. Itinerary

Our adventure begins with a drive from Kathmandu to Dolakha, a town close to the Chinese border. This journey takes approximately 6 hours and involves traveling through winding roads and dramatic landscapes. From Dolakha, you’ll continue on a rough track to Jagat.

Today’s trek takes us from Jagat to Simigaon. The trail follows the Bhote River, leading us across a bridge before climbing steep stairs to reach Simigaon. It is the first Sherpa village we encounter in Rolwaling and we can see the different house styles and traditional Sherpani attire in the village. Explore the local Buddhist monastery, which adds a cultural touch to our journey. From the village, we can enjoy a view of Gauri Shankar Himal. We camp for the night. The trek takes 4 hours.

We begin the day early in the morning with a steep ascent before entering a dense forest of rhododendrons and fir trees. As you walk through the bamboo forests, keep an eye out for wildlife such as red pandas. The trail takes you through various landscapes and offers magnificent views of the peaks, eventually leading to Kyalche. It took approximately 5 hours of trekking. We will camp for the night at Kyalche.

Your trek today involves a steady ascent from Kyelche to Beding, which takes about 5 hours. The route begins with a 30-minute walk to the Dongang huts, located by the Rolwaling torrent. After crossing a river on a bridge, you will follow the right bank of the torrent and continue uphill. We will make a stop and have lunch near a waterfall. Passing through the winter villages of Nimare, Ramding, and Gyalbruk, you’ll reach Beding, a beautiful Sherpa village at 3695 meters. Beding is known for its well-preserved Buddhist monastery, featuring beautiful murals and a rich cultural atmosphere. You will also see lots of Naks and Yaks in the village.

Today is the rest day. We will spend the day in Beding to acclimatize to the altitude. You can also take a short trek towards Chekigo Base Camp to help your body adjust to the higher elevation. It’s important to get comfortable and ready for higher altitudes in the coming days. Return to Beding for the night, where you can rest and prepare for the next phase of your trek.

You will be trekking from Beding to Na, which takes around 4 hours. The trail leads you through summer pastures where yaks graze, and then up to a monastery perched on a cliff. Na, at 4230 meters, is a small village known for its picturesque setting and yak grazing grounds. We will set up camp here and enjoy the unique environment of this high-altitude village.

Today’s excursion involves a trek to Dudh Pokhari Lake. We will hike through the Rolwaling valley to reach the turquoise lake, surrounded by high peaks. This trek allows us to explore the heart of the mountainous area. For those who are interested, there is also an option to extend the hike to a ridge for a view of Tsho Rolpa Lake before returning to Na. The trekking takes around six hours.

In the early morning, we start our return trek from Na to Simigaon, which takes about 7 to 8 hours. The descent offers a fresh perspective on the landscapes you passed earlier, including alpine pastures and dense coniferous forests. Take in the changing scenery and enjoy the gradual descent back to Simigaon, where you will set up camp for the night.

We descend from Simigaon to Jagat, covering the distance in about 4.5 hours. The trail follows the Bhote Kosi River, making for a relatively easier walk compared to the previous days. Upon arriving in Jagat, we set up camp and took time to reflect on the experiences of the trek.

On the final day, travel back to Kathmandu in a private vehicle after having breakfast in Jagat. Upon arrival in Kathmandu, you’ll have time to relax and celebrate the completion of your memorable trek. The drive takes approximately 6 hours.

Optional Variation: Rolwaling Circuit with Tsho Rolpa Pass

For those seeking a more challenging adventure, we offer an extended Rolwaling circuit that includes crossing the Tsho Rolpa Pass. This route continues with a descent to Thame, followed by Namche Bazaar and Lukla, where you’ll catch a flight back to Kathmandu. This variation is designed for experienced hikers with mountaineering skills. If you’re interested in this more demanding trek, please contact us for more details and to discuss your suitability for this option.
