The Far West Nepal trek takes you through a region rarely visited by trekkers. The trail follows the beautiful Karnali River, which originates from Tibet. You will have the rare chance to explore Nepal’s far-western frontier, with its rich cultures and natural beauty.

The Takuri ethnic group, who have lived in the West for generations, have preserved their unique culture and traditions. As you trek through their villages, you’ll notice the women adorned with colorful pearl necklaces and the men wearing traditional white coarse clothes. You can see the village houses have interlocked flat roofs. Along the way, you will also see herds of long-haired Himalayan goats, which are often used as pack animals, carrying small loads.

One of the highlights of the trek is reaching Rara Lake in the Mugu district. Rara Lake is a revered and tranquil spot for many Nepalese, known for its crystal-clear waters and serene environment. The lake is surrounded by dense forests of pine, spruce, and juniper, as well as expansive alpine meadows.

This trek takes you through off-the-beaten paths in the far-western wilds of Nepal. It gives a chance to see parts of the country that are rarely seen by outsiders. The trails are rugged and challenging, providing a true adventure for those who seek it. Itinerary

We begin our journey by taking a flight from Kathmandu to Nepalganj. As you fly above the Himalayan range, you can enjoy breathtaking views of majestic peaks like Ganesh, Manaslu, Annapurna, and Dhaulagiri. Arrive in Nepalganj, a vibrant town in southwestern Nepal with an Indian touch. Settle into your hotel and take a stroll through the town.

We will catch an early morning flight from Nepalganj to Simikot. As you ascend from the Terai plains, admire at the changing landscape and distant snow-capped Tibetan peaks. The flight provides a stunning preview of the Himalayan beauty that awaits you.

Start your trek with a descent from Simikot to Bokche. Follow the Karnali River, which reveals its dynamic nature, changing colors throughout the day and carving intricate patterns into the rocky landscape. The river’s ever-changing hues and shapes will be a compelling feature of your trek.

We continue our trek as the path weaves through scenic terrain. You’ll encounter caravans of mules and long-haired Himalayan goats, each carrying woven bags with goods for trade. The route has steep ascents and descents and follows the meandering Karnali River. Stay overnight in Lipne village.

The day begins by traversing fields and witnessing the local culture in Nassi. Raute ethnic women, known for their distinctive 10 cm diameter silver earrings and colorful necklaces, add a unique cultural element to your trek.

As you trek from Nassi to Deoli, the Karnali gorges become narrower, creating the trail a thrilling roller coaster ride clinging to rock walls. The changing landscape provides both excitement and awe-inspiring views, highlighting the rugged beauty of the region.

Today we arrive in the village of Bohara early in the day and take time to explore this incredible settlement. You can take your time to enjoy a glimpse into local life and culture, with warm welcomes from its inhabitants enriching your experience.

You must prepare for a day of varied terrain as the trail ascends, descends, and crosses multiple passes. You will journey through deep forests and rugged landscapes, eventually reaching Jogimare, situated at the foot of the Jogbari Pass. It includes several hours of trekking.

Today, we will climb to the Jogbari Pass at 3660m. At the pass, you’ll witness panoramic views of the Mugu Valley and the Mount Saipal range to the north. This pass marks the border between the Humla and Mugu regions. During the trek, you will experience hidden Himalayas, encounter ups and downs on hilly trials, and trek across juniper forests, pine, spruce, and mirror snowcapped Himalayan peaks.

Start your today’s journey by descending from the Bama village towards the vibrant town of Gamgadhi. It is the headquarters of the Mugu district. As you make your way, you’ll cross the fresh Mugu River and wander through charming Chhetri villages. Stay the night in the Gamgadhi village.

After having breakfast in Gamgadhi, we will head to our next destination, Rara Lake. After trekking for hours, we arrive at Rara Lake. It is Nepal’s largest lake and is situated at an altitude of 2990 meters. The lake is surrounded by green hills on all sides, covered in juniper trees, and is one of the most popular trekking tourist destinations in Nepal.

You can enjoy a leisurely walk along the southern shore of the lake. The forest trail shows tranquil views of Rara Lake. Explore the beautiful Rara Lake and continue trekking towards Pina. Spend the night in a comfortable lodge in Pina.

We start the day by hiking up steeply to the Gucchi Pass at 3330m, where the views are truly breathtaking. After crossing the pass, we descend towards Chauta, a village nestled in the hills. This trek involves several hours of walking.

We traverse a beautiful balcony trail, passing through villages with traditional Bothia-style houses perched on steep hillsides. We will stay the night in Kali.

As you begin your descent, you will traverse through winding switchbacks that pass through picturesque pastures. The trail guides you to Jumla, where a wider path indicates the end of your trek. You will be staying at a comfortable hotel in Jumla.

We will take an early morning flight from Jumla to either Nepalganj or Surkhet, followed by a connecting flight back to Kathmandu. Our team member will meet you at the Kathmandu airport and transfer you to your hotel.

The best time to trek to Rara Lake is during the spring (April to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons when the weather is stable and the views are clear view. You will also get to see blooming rhododendron trees and lush forests.

Trekkers need to obtain a Rara National Park Entry Permit and TIMS (Trekker’s Information Management System). You can get these from the Nepal Tourism Board office in Kathmandu.

Rara National Park is home to diverse wildlife, including musk deer, Himalayan black bear, leopard, around 20 different species of mammals, jackal, wild dog, and over 214 species of birds.
